What is a backflow valve, what does it do and why should I call SMP plumbing to service it every year?
A backflow prevention device is used to protect potable water supplies from contamination or pollution due to backflow. In water distribution systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower, or other fixture, if this pressure should change or drop there is a risk of backflow which has the potential to pollute our water supply.
Under state legislation, all local Queensland governments are required to maintain a program for the registration, maintenance and testing of testable backflow prevention devices installed in their Council area. The property owner of a backflow device is required to submit a Form 9 (backflow test report) to their local council for each device located at your property annually, to ensure the valve is working correctly.
All testable backflow devices are to be tested every 12 months by a licenced plumber who holds a “backflow endorsement”. They must be in working order with a Form 9 issued to the local council once the valve passes its test. Types of testable valves are - Single-check valves, Double-check valves, reduced pressure zone devices (RPZ) and registered air gaps.
SMP plumbing offers a service second to none when it comes to the mandatory yearly service, maintenance & upkeep of all backflow valves, including the issuing of form 9’s to the local council on behalf of the valve owner to comply with state government legislation. We will communicate, organise, and schedule your required annual backflow testing in a timely cost cost-effective manner, preventing the property owner from receiving demand letters from the local council to test your valves.

What is a Thermostatic mixing valve, what does it do, and why should I call SMP plumbing to service my TMV every 6 to 12 months.
A TMV and a tempering valve (found on most domestic hot water units), combine hot and cold water together to maintain a specific water temperature when sending water through a water outlet, however, a TMV is far more advanced in its operation, serviceability, and service it provides than that of a tempering valve. TMVs are usually installed in public bathrooms, child care, and aged care buildings to protect the end used from burns as well as the potential build-up of Legionnaires bacteria within the outlet fixtures.
What is the Australian standard for thermostatic mixing valves?
Thermostatic mixing valves are a tool to help you meet your obligations to two Australian Standards that were introduced in 1998. Relevant commercial businesses and properties are obligated to comply with Australian Standard 3500.4. 2 Clause 1.6 to ensure stored water is 60°C.
This Australian Standard then refers to AS4032.3, Requirements for field testing, maintenance, or replacement of TMVs. These standard states that: TMVs are to be field-tested (minor service) at intervals of not more than 12 months.
SMP plumbing’s TMV servicing system removes all the hassle from the property owner by communicating, organising, and scheduling your required TMV testing in a timely cost cost-effective manner.
